A New World Is Within Reach
“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” - Mark 1:15
In the face of military occupation, economic exploitation, and religious corruption the Gospel of Mark has Jesus begin his ministry by boldly declaring that it doesn’t have to be this way.
The kingdom of God that Jesus proclaims is not some end of the world scenario. Rather it describes a different way for us to live and care for each other. It is literal good news for the literal poor, freedom for the literally oppressed, care for the literally sick, and welcome for the literal stranger.
Instead of seeking revenge and retribution we practice forgiveness. Instead of caring only for me and mine, we see every person as our neighbor. We see our Heavenly Father not as ours alone but as father of the whole wide world, the entire universe.
We are invited to embrace this vision with every fiber of our beings. Repentance means turning from our old ways of doing things and embracing this new way.
A new world is within our reach.
