Balancing Self Sacrifice with Self Care

“You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me." John 12:8

The command to love our neighbors as ourselves presumes a healthy center. It presumes a level of self care and self nurture.

It is truth that many of us need to learn empathy and compassion. Many of us need immediately to start practicing generosity even if we ourselves do not yet have everything we want.

Nevertheless, there are quite a few who are reading and listening to this who are not being good stewards of our physical health, nor are we caring for ourselves mentally and emotionally.

Jesus models both self sacrifice and self care. He frequently withdrew and took time for himself. At times he distanced himself from his family and his hometown when he needed to.

He practiced regular prayer and meditation. He ate and drank and spent time with friends to the point of being called a drunk and a glutton. He even got his sleep too. Sometimes he was a little extravagant.

No one can pour from an empty cup. Self care is required if we are to be strong enough to help carry the cross.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
