When Shouts Prevail
“But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified, and their voices prevailed.” Luke 23:23
Those who would control and manipulate us usually do so by trying control and manipulate our emotions. Their loud shouts whip up anger, whip up our resentment, whip up our fears and insecurities and drive us to actions that benefit themselves and no one else.
We get caught up in their whirlwind, but as the Prophet Elijah learned, the voice of God is not in the whirlwind. The voice of God is not in the earthquake or in the fire. The voice of God is not in the chaos or confusion. The voice of God comes to us in a still small voice, in a quiet whisper. (1 Kings 19:12)
That voice reminds us that we are beloved. That voice reminds us that we are never abandoned or forsaken. Even if we are in a barren wilderness, we fear not because the voice of the shepherd is guiding us to greener pastures.
When shouts prevail injustice inevitably follows. Only the still soft voice of God’s love will ever lead us home.
