The Truth Will Set Us Free
“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - from John 8:31-32
Some truths are difficult for us to acknowledge. Sometimes acknowledging the truth portrays us and the people we love in a bad light. Sometimes acknowledging the truth forces us to deal with our guilt and shame.
Yet, if we are going to abide in the way of love Jesus taught and demonstrated, we have to come to terms with the ways in which we have failed to love. We have to be willing acknowledge the ways we have failed to honor God by failing to honor the reflection of God in ourselves and in each other.
Most of us like to think of ourselves as good and decent people who always do the right things for the right reasons. As a result we will deny or rationalize any of our actions or behaviors that are inconsistent with our desired self image.
We will stay stuck repeating the same mistakes and getting the same outcomes. Only the truth can set us free to walk a different path and get a different outcome.
