The Holy Spirit Heals Division
“At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were.” - Acts 11:11
Peter breaking bread with these Gentile folk from Caesarea was about far more than his willingness to change and adapt his religious customs for them.
The people of Israel and Judea were a conquered people who lived under the boot of Roman occupation.
The Romans looked on the Jews so much so that they built the new city of Caesarea for themselves rather than live in Jerusalem, a place they considered as backwards as it was inconvenient.
The Jews hated these unclean Gentiles who had all the money, all the power, and all the luxury and status. They wanted God to punish and purge these folks, not redeem and reconcile them.
Were it not for the work of the Holy Spirit touching the hearts of both the Jews and the Gentiles…
Were it not for these Gentiles having the humility to seek and accept the help and advice of the Jews they once looked down on…
Were it not for these Jewish Christians having the grace and faith to welcome and nurture the oppressors they once wanted punished…
These folk would have forever remained divided by their ethnicity and social status as well as by their religion.
Holy Spirit led people heal divisions.
