What Do We Really Want?

“When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" - John 5:6

On the surface, Jesus’s question to the man who had been ill for 38 years is shocking. 38 years of hardship, 38 years of struggle, 38 years of disappointment, who wouldn’t want those to come to an end?

No doubt the man was unhappy with where he was. On the other hand, after 38 years, he knew how to navigate it. He knew how to survive. In a sense, he had become comfortable in an uncomfortable situation.

His being made well would require him to give up the people, places, and things that he had become accustomed to. He would no longer survive on alms. He would no longer be a sympathetic figure.

He would have to find new things to do, new places to be, and new people to be around. Did he want that?

The first step to wellbeing and wholeness is asking ourselves what we really want.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
