Why Are We Building?
Why Are We Building?
“Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves;” - Genesis 11:4
The story of Babel is the ancient scripture writer’s account of how humanity came to be so divided and unable to understand one another.
Up until this point humanity had been on one accord and capable of accomplishing darn near anything, even building a city with a tower reaching into the heavens themselves.
Why were they building this tower? It wasn’t because they wanted to be able to commune with God more easily so they wanted to build a tower to the heavens. It wasn’t because they wanted to inspire the hope that anything was possible. It wasn’t even a massive jobs program to make sure everyone could work.
The tower they were building was being built out of human ego, pride, and arrogance. It was being built for selfish reasons and self aggrandizing purposes.
What was the end result? Chaos, confusion and division were the inevitable results of selfish ambition. It’s not wrong for us to be ambitious. It’s not wrong for us to build. But we better know why.
I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
