Don’t Get Comfortable with Your Demons

“I beg you, do not torment me," for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.” From Luke 8:28 -29

The man with the legion of demons initially wasn’t interested in Jesus’s help. He had gotten comfortable with them. They had given him the strength to break chains, and the freedom to lead an unconventional life. People didn’t respect him but they did fear him.

He was comfortable with his dysfunctions. He knew how to live with them. He knew what to expect. He knew how to navigate. I don’t think he necessarily liked living the way he was, but he had accepted it.

He had come to identify himself with his problems… So much so, that when Jesus asked him his name he responded “Legion” for we are many.” Instead of asking for help, he asked Jesus to leave him alone.

Many of us have been stuck in a cycle of negative thinking and behavior, for so long that we are comfortable describing ourselves as fat, or lazy, or impulsive, as greedy, hot tempered, even violent, or unchaste (Keeping it clean.). We describe ourselves as lacking courage and discipline.

That may well be the way we have been living, but it’s not who we are. Don’t get comfortable with your demons. Acknowledge them, but don’t accept them. Seek and accept the help and support you need to get and keep them out of your life.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
