Clothed with Gladness

“Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;” Psalm 30:11

There will be times in life where we are heartbroken and disappointed, when we feel the pain of loss, when we mourn and grieve. We don’t have to pretend that we are ok when we are not ok. It’s appropriate for us to give voice to our pain rather than deny it.

There may even be times when we feel guilt and shame, when we live with regret, when we see no possibility for redemption, reconciliation, or restoration. Sometimes these feelings may even be fully justified.

These negative experiences and negative emotions are something that most of us are going to experience during our lifetimes. Nevertheless, the writer of Psalm 30 wants us to remember that these are only places we visit, they are not where we are supposed to live.

While we can’t put a time table on our grief, we like the poet Wordsworth, will one day find ourselves “surprised by joy”. And while we can’t undo the past, as we repent, as we change our focus and direction, we will find ourselves clothed with gladness again one day.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
