Forgive Us Our Collective Debt: Prayer Part 5 (90 Seconds)
Forgive Us Our Collective Debt: Prayer Part 5
Many of us live in such individualistic societies that when we hear the phrase “And forgive us our sins…” from Luke 11:4, what we actually hear is ‘forgive me my sins.’
But the concept of sin in the scriptures is closely intertwined with the concepts of peace, justice, and societal wellbeing. These concepts in the Bible are never solely about the actions of a lone individual. Rather they are about the world we support, sustain, and enjoy.
Many individuals in richer societies have never personally done anything to hurt, harm, or oppress anyone, but nevertheless enjoy the benefits injustice and exploitation…
The electronics devices in our hands, how many were produced with raw materials sourced from places with little to no labor laws, environmental laws, by workers at near subsistence wages, with no health insurance or worker’s compensation when they get hurt?
How many of us know if the clothing in our closets were produced in sweatshops? It’s hard for to know. But did we ask? Did we try to find out?
If you’ve made it this far, perhaps you’re aware that aware that some of our phones were produced in factories with such harsh circumstances that the factories had to put up suicide nets to stop workers from leaping to their deaths.
Do we have any idea what’s been done in our name to make this gas for our daily commute affordable?
Some of us dismissively respond, yeah but what can we do about it?
First recognize it and ask forgiveness.
Second repent or turn from it by making the question what can I do an operative one.
Then third we work for redemption, healing, and restoration.
I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
