60 Seconds of Hope: It’s OK To Not Know

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance, and he set out, not knowing where he was going.” - Hebrews 11:8

I had no desire to go into ministry or become a pastor. My father and both my grandfathers were ministers and pastors. I knew what it looked like. I had no desire for it.

As an undergraduate, sitting in the office of career development and placement trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life, I came across a catalog for Chicago Theological Seminary. Immediately, I knew I was supposed to attend.

I didn’t particularly want to go seminary, or move to Chicago. I delayed three years to live a little, before I went. I still wasn’t planning to go into ministry. I didn’t really know what I was going to do or where I was going to do it. I had thoughts and ideas, but no concrete plans.

Abraham knew he had a calling on his life, but he didn’t know the where, when, or how. I knew seminary was the next right step in my life. I didn’t know much else.

It’s ok not to know. If you are certain that you are responding to the call of God in your life and not your own vanity, take the first step and trust God to unfold your path. That’s what living in faith means.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
