All Peace Ain’t Good Peace

“Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!” - Luke 12:51

The Roman Empire celebrated itself for bringing “peace” to the world. But its Pax Romana was built through military domination and sustained by brutal violence and its threat. Bow to the emperor or face total destruction. It mattered little how many innocent and vulnerable people were hurt as long as they accomplished their objectives.

Under the so called peace of Rome, the weak served the strong. The wealthy and powerful led fabulous lives while the poor went begging for scraps. The local religious and political leaders could live comfortably and have some real autonomy as long as they made it clear that they were loyal to Rome and had no higher allegiance.  It was  peace that too many of them readily accepted. They were the moderates of their day who valued order and stability at the expense of justice.

Jesus is saying here what Martin Luther King, jr. said in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice

Jesus does not support a negative peace.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
