The Cup That Cannot Satisfy

In my experience, most people who become angry and bitter have very real reasons.
Often, they—or the people they love—have suffered grievous harm, injury, or injustice.
Other times, they simply possess the compassion and moral imagination to grieve deeply for people they have never met.
When injustice leaves a bitter taste in our mouths, we are tempted to cleanse it by drinking from the cup of rage, followed by a chaser of revenge and retribution.
It may taste good in the moment—but it poisons us in the end and makes our spirits sick.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

Salvation, liberation, and deliverance.
Redemption, restoration, and reconciliation.
Justice, equity, and equality.
These are the elements of righteousness.
These are the only things that will ever truly quench our thirst.
May we always thirst for righteousness, not rage.
