When What’s Missing Is All We See
“But the people thirsted there for water, and the people complained…” — Exodus 17:3
They were tired.
Frustrated.
Thirsty.
They had been delivered from Egypt.
They had seen the sea part.
They had walked through on dry ground.
But in this moment, none of that mattered.
What was missing now
felt more real
than what had already been given.
So they complained.
We do the same.
We have known blessing.
We have been carried through more than we remember.
But the problem in front of us —
the setback,
the shortage,
the uncertainty,
the delay —
can become all we see.
What is striking in this passage
is not the people’s complaint.
It is God’s response.
God does not lash out.
God does not walk away.
God does not withhold.
God provides water.
God understands exhaustion.
God understands frustration.
God understands when anxiety overtakes gratitude.
And God continues to provide.
Even when we are thirsty.
Even when we are tired.
Even when we complain.
