How Hope Becomes a Part of Who We Are

“Affliction produces endurance,

and endurance produces character,

and character produces hope.”

— Romans 5:3–4

These words are as challenging

as they are hope-filled.

But they are not empty platitudes.

The one who wrote them

knew hardship.

He had been arrested

and beaten more than once.

He had been slandered.

He had known long seasons

of doing without.

Paul never called these struggles

blessings in disguise.

But he did believe

that God was still working for good

in every situation

where people aligned themselves in love

with God’s purposes.

That conviction gave him

the strength to endure.

And over time,

endurance shapes something in us.

It forms a character

marked, above all else,

by hope.

Hope that is no longer just something we feel

from time to time—

but something

that becomes part of who we are.
